About Bom & Yeon

BomHi. I'm Bom. I like people, and I like finding the good in a chart.

YeonI'm Yeon. I like accuracy. And I like telling you what Bom is too polite to say.

What is saju?

Saju (사주, "four pillars") is the Korean way of reading a birth date. The year, month, day and hour you were born each become a pair of characters from the old Chinese calendar: one heavenly stem and one earthly branch. Eight characters in total, which is why it's also called palja, "eight characters".

Each character carries one of five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and a yin or yang side. How they balance is the shape of your chart.

What's a Day Master?

The heavenly stem of your birth day is the character that stands for you. There are ten, so there are ten souls: Gap Wood, Eul Wood, Byeong Fire, Jeong Fire, Mu Earth, Gi Earth, Gyeong Metal, Sin Metal, Im Water and Gye Water. Meet all ten.

How we calculate

We use real solar terms (the exact moments the sun crosses each 15° point, computed from astronomical data) to set the year and month pillars, so someone born on 3 February and someone born on 5 February can get different charts. Times are read as Korean time. If you don't know your birth hour, we read the other three pillars, which is how many Koreans use saju too.

What we don't claim

Saju here is a language for talking about personality, relationships and timing, with a lot of jokes. It is not a prediction, a diagnosis or advice. Nothing on this site should decide anything about your health, money, safety or relationships for you. For entertainment and self-reflection.

Who's behind it

Bom & Yeon is a small independent project made by people who love K-dramas, webtoons and old calendars. Say hello at yeon@bomandyeon.com.
