Short answer
Saju (사주, 'four pillars') is the Korean system that turns your birth year, month, day and hour into eight characters, and reads them as a personality profile, with the day you were born giving your core type.
Saju in one paragraph
Saju is the Korean name for the four pillars of destiny, the same system the Chinese call Bazi. The name sounds grand, but in daily Korean life it works more like a personality language. People look up their saju for fun, check a couple's compatibility (궁합, gunghap) before a wedding, and visit saju cafés with friends the way others might do a tarot night. At Bom & Yeon we treat it the way most people treat MBTI: a mirror for self-understanding, not a prediction.
Your birth moment becomes four pillars: year, month, day and hour. Each pillar is a pair of characters from the old calendar, a heavenly stem on top and an earthly branch below. Four pairs make eight characters, which is why saju is also called palja (팔자), 'eight characters'.
Your birthday type: the one character that is you
Of those eight characters, one stands for you: the heavenly stem of your birth day. Saju calls it the Day Master (일간). We call it your birthday type, because that is what it is. There are ten, each with an element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water) and a yin or yang side. Each has an image that makes it easy to remember.
| Birthday type | Saju name | Element | In one line |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Tall Pine | Gap Wood 甲 | Yang Wood | Loyal, proud and steady. Protects first, talks later, and would rather fix your problem than say how they feel. |
| The Climbing Flower | Eul Wood 乙 | Yin Wood | Sweet, adaptable and quietly unstoppable. Bends to fit, remembers everything, and finds a way around every wall. |
| The Sun | Byeong Fire 丙 | Yang Fire | Warm, loud and generous. Loves big and fast, hates being ignored, and lights up every room including the group chat. |
| The Candle | Jeong Fire 丁 | Yin Fire | Quiet, deep and intensely loyal. Falls rarely and completely, reads meaning into everything, and remembers how you made them feel. |
| The Mountain | Mu Earth 戊 | Yang Earth | Calm, solid and protective. Slow to start, very hard to move, and shows love by quietly taking care of things. |
| The Garden Field | Gi Earth 己 | Yin Earth | Nurturing, practical and quietly brilliant. Notices everything, feeds everyone, and overthinks one text for forty minutes. |
| The Sword | Gyeong Metal 庚 | Yang Metal | Blunt, loyal and protective. Says the hard thing out loud, forgives slowly, and shows love by fixing your problems. |
| The Jewel | Sin Metal 辛 | Yin Metal | Elegant, sensitive and hard to forget. Wants to be chosen clearly and out loud, and goes politely cold when hurt. |
| The Ocean | Im Water 壬 | Yang Water | Free, curious and magnetic. Falls fast, dives deep, then needs air. Hates labels that feel like paperwork. |
| The Rain | Gye Water 癸 | Yin Water | Intuitive, gentle and quietly perceptive. Senses what is wrong before anyone says it, and analyses text tone like a contract. |

How saju compares to the zodiac and MBTI
People usually meet saju through the animal zodiac or through MBTI, so here is the honest comparison.
| Korean saju | Chinese zodiac | Western zodiac | MBTI | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it reads | Your birth year, month, day and hour | Your birth year | Your birth date (sun sign) | Your answers to a questionnaire |
| Number of core types | 10 birthday types, 60 day pillars | 12 animals | 12 signs | 16 types |
| What sets your core type | The day you were born | The year you were born | The month you were born | How you answer |
| Can it change? | No, it is fixed by your birth date | No | No | Yes, if your answers change |
| Built to compare people? | Yes, couple compatibility (gunghap) is a core use | Loosely, animal pairs | Loosely, sign pairs | Not originally |
| Best used for | Self-reflection, relationships, conversation | Fun, tradition | Fun, reflection | Self-reflection, work and teams |
The short version: the zodiac animal comes from your birth year and is shared by everyone born that year. Your saju birthday type comes from your birth day, which is why it feels far more personal. MBTI comes from a questionnaire, so it can change if your answers change. More detail: saju vs MBTI and saju vs the zodiac.
The five elements, briefly
Every character in a chart carries one of five elements. They feed and check each other in two cycles: Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth holds Metal, Metal carries Water, Water feeds Wood; and Wood breaks Earth, Earth dams Water, Water puts out Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal cuts Wood. Compatibility in saju is mostly a story about those two cycles.
| Relation | Pairs | In a couple it feels like |
|---|---|---|
| Feeds (generating cycle) | Water to Wood, Wood to Fire, Fire to Earth, Earth to Metal, Metal to Water | Easy flow. One gives, the other grows. |
| Checks (controlling cycle) | Wood to Earth, Earth to Water, Water to Fire, Fire to Metal, Metal to Wood | Friction and pull. Growth through challenge. |
| Same element | Wood and Wood, Fire and Fire, and so on | A mirror. Instant understanding, shared blind spots. |

What saju is not
It is not a verdict on your life. Traditional readers use saju for timing and advice; we use it as a language for personality and relationships, with jokes. Nothing here should decide anything about your health, money or relationships. Two people with the same birthday type can be very different, the same way two people with the same MBTI are.
It is also not one-size-fits-all. Your full chart has eight characters, and the 60 day pillars already split each birthday type into six versions. Your birthday type is the headline, not the whole article.

FAQ
Is saju the same as Chinese astrology?
It comes from the same root, the four pillars system known in Chinese as Bazi. Korean saju uses the same calendar maths and adds its own vocabulary and habits, like gunghap for couples.
Do I need my birth time for saju?
Not for your birthday type. That comes from the date alone. The birth hour adds the fourth pillar, and it matters for the day only if you were born close to midnight.
Is saju accurate?
Saju is a traditional framework, not a science, and nothing in it has been proven to predict events. Many people find the personality descriptions useful for reflection, the same way people use MBTI. Treat it as a mirror, not a forecast.
How many saju types are there?
Ten birthday types (Day Masters). Paired with the twelve branches they form sixty day pillars, and a full chart has eight characters, so the number of complete charts runs into the hundreds of thousands.
