Fire and Water: compatibility from the Fire side

Water puts out Fire. If you are a Fire Day Master, Byeong or Jeong, a Water Day Master, Im (壬, the ocean) or Gye (癸, the rain), is the element that controls you. Steam, hissing, a lot of drama: this is the pairing K-drama writers would choose for enemies to lovers. It is also one of the most balancing matches in saju, because Fire without Water burns out, and the classics say so again and again.

Water controls Fire in the controlling cycle, so Water is Fire's Officer.

BomThey give your fire depth, and you give their water light. When you get this right, you make each other better.

Chemistry

From your side, Water is Officer: Seven Killings (편관) if you share polarity, Direct Officer (정관) if you do not. Officer energy brings discipline, perspective and a cool head. Water partners slow you down, think before they speak and see three moves ahead. The heavenly combination here is Jeong with Im (丁壬合), the candle and the ocean, an old symbol of intimate attraction. And the Qiong Tong Bao Jian loves Byeong with Im: the sun reflected on a great river (江湖輝映), brilliance doubled by a mirror. When this pairing works, it is spectacular.

Friction

Same-polarity pairs feel the douse most. Byeong with Im is technically a heavenly stem clash (丙壬沖), sun against ocean, and Jeong with Gye is another (丁癸沖), candle in the rain. You may feel criticized, dampened or held back; they may feel you are reckless, loud and impossible to calm down. Water processes feelings internally, while Fire processes them out loud and immediately. That mismatch can make arguments feel like one person shouting into a lake.

In love

In love the tension is magnetic. They are mysterious to you; you are dazzling to them. It works when Water uses its calm to support you rather than to judge you, and when you learn that a slower response is not a cold one. Give each other different kinds of space: you need to vent, they need to think.

As friends

As friends, Water is the one who talks you out of the 2 a.m. decision, and you are the one who gets them out of the house.

YeonIf you only feel loved when someone is fighting you, that is steam, not chemistry. Check the temperature.

How to make it work

Wood is the bridge: Water feeds Wood and Wood feeds Fire. Learning together, growing a shared project or just walking through a park turns their control into fuel for you. Agree on conflict rules. Fire needs a quick check-in; Water needs a little time. Both are reasonable.

The Day Master pairs

Read from the Fire side, the four Day Master pairings here are Byeong with Im (Seven Killings), Byeong with Gye (Direct Officer), Jeong with Im (Direct Officer), and Jeong with Gye (Seven Killings), and each of those pairings links to its own compatibility page.

Is Water bad for Fire in saju?

Water controls Fire, so there is pressure. Classical texts also say strong Fire needs Water for balance, and Jeong with Im is a heavenly combination.

Which Fire and Water pairs clash?

Byeong with Im and Jeong with Gye are two of the four classic heavenly stem clashes. Byeong with Gye and Jeong with Im tend to feel softer.
